Default What is a Dedicated Server?

    What is a Dedicated Server?

A dedicated server is a single web server within a network of computers, dedicated solely to one customer, most often a large business.

A dedicated server better meets the needs of a large business for several reasons. The client can customize the hardware setup as well as the software to meet exact needs. Data access is faster and high traffic is easily accommodated.

Dedicated servers normally come with good customer service from the web hosting company. The host will work with the client to make sure the dedicated server is meeting all of the needs of the client. (as long as it is managed)

Another advantage of a dedicated server is that the client can easily create several domains on that server. In the case of a company that has multiple divisions or a chain of retail outlets, this becomes much more cost-effective and efficient than each individual division or retail outlet renting host space on a different web server.

In the case where a business may want a dedicated server for the benefits of fast access, customer service, and customization, but they don't require all of the physical space, they can become a web host themselves and sub-lease that extra space to others to set up their own websites and domains.

Another added advantage of a dedicated server is stability. In operating a dedicated server you have much control over what can happen on that server. What scripts can be run, what types of online activities can occur, etc. Conversely when you are one of many businesses on a shared server, your "up-time" can be affected by activities that are beyond your control.
The ability to enhance security is also an advantage for any business residing on a dedicated server.

For all of these reasons and more, dedicated servers provide an excellent option for many larger businesses. Personal websites or very small businesses generally do not require a dedicated server and can save money by leasing space from a standard web host.

    Another Definition:
In the Web hosting business, a dedicated server refers to the rental and exclusive use of a computer that includes a Web server, related software, and connection to the Internet, housed in the Web hosting company's premises. A dedicated server is usually needed for a Web site (or set of related company sites) that may develop a considerable amount of traffic - for example, a site that must handle up to 35 million hits a day. The server can usually be configured and operated remotely from the client company. Web hosting companies claim that the use of a dedicated server on their premises saves router, Internet connection, security system, and network administration costs.

In renting a dedicated server, the client company may be required to use a specified computer system or may be offered a choice of several systems. Some host providers allow a client company to purchase and install its own computer server at the host provider's location, a service known as colocation.

Typically, a dedicated server is rented that provides a stated amount of memory, hard disk space, and bandwidth ( here meaning the number of gigabytes of data that can be delivered each month). Some hosting companies allow the renter of a dedicated server to do virtual hosting, in turn renting services on the server to third parties for their Web sites. domain name system, e-mail, and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capabilities are typically included and some companies provide an easy-to-use control interface.

yes and no. You can turn your home pc into a server but it is not really a dedicated server unless you are keeping it on 24/7 and you only use it as a server and no longer as a home pc. But none the less it is still a server where you have total control over it so in that sense it would be seen as a dedicated server.

Here is an article on the web which explains how to build your home pc into a server: Windows XP Home Networking: Turn a Desktop Computer into a Server

Let us know if you need any help or create a new thread to keep it separate.

Yes you must buy a domain such as trane.com /eu/org/net/info/co.uk, etc.

You can do so for example on buydomains.com ,

You can also sell your domain, as for example TraneEquipment.com 's cost is 3000$ .

If you want to register (buy) your own domain, search on google, and find some sites where you can do so. Normal price is about 10$ .

There are 2 ways to do that Greg.

    1. You can connect directly to your servers IP (in that way it will be free and you won't have to buy a domain name) There is also a service out there which is called no-ip or something where you should be able to use that and then use a free .tk domain name.

    2. just go to godaddy.com or any other domain site and buy a domain for around $10 a year. It is hard to find good names tho but when you do, hold onto it!

creating a dedicated server is really expensive.. since you need to buy a high-end server and at least the server is open 24/7. Most of the Online Private Servers are closing because of the expenses of their server.
